7 Coming Home to the Body
🌿 In this heartfelt episode, we explore how to cultivate a truly beautiful and loving relationship with yourself by mindfully "going home" to your body. Following Thich Nhat Hanh’s gentle guidance, we learn to reconcile with our physical selves—offering a sincere apology for past neglect and embracing our bodies with the tenderness of a dear friend. We move beyond the "fight" of everyday stress, using the breath to authorize total relaxation and transform angst into the energy of joy and compassion. By establishing ourselves in the present moment through calming and smiling, we finally touch the miracle of being fully alive, discovering that an authentic, loving relationship with our body is the ultimate foundation for inner peace.

In this meditation, Thay shares so much about the type of relationship we can have with our body. Naturally, this is a demonstration of the relationship we can have with everything in our life.
He invites us to be actively involved in a relationship.
"Now you go home as a friend."
He grounds himself in mindfulness.
"Breathing in, I'm aware of my body."
Listen to how he greets himself with kindness and recognizes how his choices have impacted the relationship. He ends with an apology.
"I'm back to you.
I have neglected you for a long time.
I have made you suffer so much.
Sorry, I'm home to you."
To offer the most authentic apology, he returns to mindfulness.
"Breathing in, I'm aware of my body.
Breathing out, I smile to my body.
I want to reconcile with my body."
He offers love to his body.
"Hello there, my body, I'm home to you.
Embrace it tenderly."
Listen for: the empathy, the recognition that he's forgotten his body, how he values his body and he sincerely apologizes.
Then he grounds himself in his breathing.
"Breathing in, I'm aware of my body.
Breathing out, I smile to my body."
he continues,
"Darling, I'm home to you.
I am taking care of you."
Imagines if a loved one greeted us the same way. How would that feel to receive those offered words?

In the second gatha, he offers us a path for healing, a path that is readily available to us.
He prepares himself with mindfulness.
"Breathing in, I allow my body to relax.
Breathing out, I relax my body."
He makes it clear that our breath can help us in this relationship.
"You can only relax your body when you stop.
Your in-breath has the capacity of stopping.
And when your in-breath has the capacity of stopping,
it becomes very pleasant."
He offers us a way to transition our thinking from "fighting" and angst to one of "joy".Â
"Your in-breath is not an act of fighting anymore.
It is deeply enjoyable."
We are now building joy. Joy is important for healing and our ability to offer love.
"Breathe in such a way that your in-breath has the capacity for healing.
Breathing in, I allow my body to relax.
Breathing out, I relax my body.
Whether you are in a sitting position or in a lying position,
your mindful breathing helps you to totally relax.
You authorize your body to rest."
At this point, our breath has helped us to stop and listen to our body, begin building joy and calm and ease our body's. Â
[bell]
Again, he ensures his focus is being mindful.
"Breathing in, I relax my feelings, my emotions.
Breathing out, I smile."
He reinforces what our breath has offered us. With calmness, we can stop and listen. Then with a smile, we share the joy of peace within us.
"Calming.
Smiling."
By kindly listening to our bodies and minds, we hear the love those parts of us need and we offer compassionate love with our smile.
"The smile is already the energy of love, the energy of compassion."
[bell]
He remains mindful and continues calming himself to fill his awareness with peace. Then continues to build his happiness by sharing his loving smile.
"Breathing in, I establish myself in the present moment.
Breathing out, I know this is a wonderful moment.
Calming.
Smiling."
He clearly defines the moment so it is very clear to him.
"Present moment.
Wonderful moment."
He shares how we got here and what here offers us.
"When you come home to the present moment,
for your in-breath.
You become fully alive, fully present.
You can touch life in the here and the now."
The path to liberation is through mindfulness, concentration and insight lead from kindly greeting ourself, gently listening and then loving ourself. Â This beautify relationship brings us to Wonderment!
"You feel that you are alive.
You touch the miracle that you are alive."
